This weekend saw all sorts of action in the world of sports, from NFL OT thrillers, to a pair of Game 7s in baseball, and even some major controversy across the pond. Here’s a look back at some of the wackier moments of the weekend.

Fresh Prince of Globe Life Field

Now, this is a story all about how the Braves’ chances of reaching their first World Series since 1999 got flipped, turned upside down.

Atlanta was chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’, all cool with a 3-1 NLCS lead over the Dodgers, when LA had a big turn in fortunes. Trailing 2-1 in the 6th inning of Game 5, Dodgers catcher Will Smith stepped to the plate to face… Braves reliever Will Smith. (Note: the real Will Smith was nowhere to be found)

Smith belted a three-run homer to center field, pushing the Dodgers in front for good, before going on to win three straight games at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The Dodgers will stay put in Arlington for the first ever neutral-site World Series, making their third trip to the Fall Classic in four years — the first team to manage that feat since the New York Yankees dynasty in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s.

Best Betts

The Dodgers didn’t get there without a little help from their defense, though. Mookie Betts made a spectacular catch up against the right field wall Saturday night that took away an extra-base hit from Marcel Ozuna, followed up with a classic celebration.

And for an encore, Betts robbed a solo home run from Freddie Freeman that would’ve extended Atlanta’s Game 7 lead to 4-2. Los Angeles went on to win 4-3, thanks to Cody Bellinger’s solo shot late in the 7th inning.

VAR robbery

Saturday’s early morning Merseyside Derby provided tons of action and plenty of controversy. Everton tied rival Liverpool late in the match, only to have all three points stolen at the death. Or so it seemed.

Liverpool took a 3-2 lead in stoppage time, only to have the goal overturned by the Video Assistant Referee, which upon instant Twitter review, should not have been the case. Liverpool had to settle for one point on the draw, leaving their rivals still at the top of the table.

Lee Corso

College GameDay has been a Saturday morning staple all across the country for more than three decades. Since the show began in 1987, Lee Corso has been bringing his crazy antics into our living rooms, and on Saturday, he finally fulfilled what he called a “lifelong dream,” while broadcasting the show from the comfort of his own home amid the pandemic.

The ESPN personality said he has tried for year to make his weekly headgear pick from on top of a real elephant for an Alabama game, but ESPN brass always told him no. He finally got to do it on Saturday — well, sort of.

Corso nailed the pick, too. No. 2 Alabama took care of No. 3 Georgia 41-24 in Tuscaloosa Saturday night.

Derrick Henry’s mad dash

On Tuesday night football, Derrick Henry set Twitter ablaze with his nasty stiff arm that sent the Bills’ Josh Norman flying. On Sunday afternoon, he captured the hearts of the country again with a 94-yard sprint to the end zone.

Henry went on to cap off the Titans’ overtime win with a touchdown run from a direct snap.

Tom Brady’s age is starting to show

Tom Brady has been playing at an elite level for the better part of two decades. But as he’s aged over the years, some will say his age is starting to show. That wasn’t the case Sunday evening, as he threw a pair of touchdowns and led the Buccaneers to a 38-10 rout of the Packers.

That was the case, however after the game, when he had a chat on the field with Packers rookie Jon Runyan, Jr. Why is that so significant? Brady and Jon Runyan Sr.’s careers overlapped at the University of Michigan in 1996.

Butt Pick?

It’s hard being a New York Jets fan. It’s been nothing but disappointment over the last decade since Gang Green made a pair of AFC Championship Game appearances in 2009-10. For nearly 10 years, the Jets have been synonymous with one play — the Butt Fumble. We’ve all seen it, we all love it.

Despite a 24-0 loss to division rival Miami on Sunday, Jets fans at least had a little something to cheer for — a new play added to the rear-end repertoire, this one a little more positive. Say hello to the Butt Pick.
